Shirley Bassey out of Nelson Mandela birthday concert

Dame Shirley Bassey has pulled out of the forthcoming Nelson Mandela tribute concert, set to take place at London's Hyde Park on Friday (June 27) to mark his 90th birthday.

Bassey had emergency stomach surgery last month, but was expected to recover in time for the performance. However, her surgeon has advised her not to travel, reports BBC News, prompting her cancellation.

Amy Winehouse is still scheduled to appear at the bash, despite being diagnosed as suffering from the lung disease emphysema.

Queen, Annie Lennox and Simple Minds are among the other acts set to play at the show.

Franz Ferdinand play sensational 'secret' Glastonbury show

Franz Ferdinand played a sensational 'secret' show at Glastonbury tonight (June 27), driving a huge crowd wild with a mix of old classics and songs from their forthcoming third album.

The band's appearance on the Park Stage had been kept secret until the news broke yesterday (June 26), though many of the crowd, having already been at Glastonbury when the news emerged, were shocked when the band appeared onstage for their first performance at the festival since they played the Other Stage in 2004.

Frontman Alex Kapranos greeted the crowd with the word "Surprise" before the group launched into their hit 'The Dark Of The Matinee'.

As well as playing hits like 'Michael' and 'Walk Away', Franz showcased four songs from their forthcoming new album, the follow-up to 2005's 'You Could Have It So Much Better'. They were 'Kathryn Kiss Me', 'Ulysees', 'Turn It On', and 'What She Came For' - the new tunes getting an ecstatic response.

Kapranos dedicated the band's biggest hit, 'Take Me Out', to a punter who had spotted him earlier in the day, but mistakenly believed the band were from Sheffield, and not their native Glasgow.

Franz Ferdinand finished with their traditional closer 'This Fire' before exiting to huge cheers from the massive crowd.

The set was:

'The Dark Of The Matinee'
'Kathryn Kiss Me'
'Walk Away'
'Take Me Out'
'Ulysses'
'What She Came For'
'Michael'
'Turn It On'
'This Fire'

The Sopranos - Academics Study The Sopranos

TV hit THE SOPRANOS is a cultural phenomenon "equivalent to the Beatles and Shakespeare", according to a group of academics travelling to New York this month to analyse the show.

Professors from 60 countries will descend on Manhattan's Fordham University this month (22-25May08) to dissect the show in a conference entitled The Sopranos: A Wake.

They will examine the show's role in popular culture and the messages it delivers regarding issues such as gender; parenthood; ethnicity; race and racism.

And Paul Levinson, from Fordham University, insists The Sopranos' place in history should not be underestimated.

He says, "The Sopranos is the equivalent of the Beatles, or Shakespeare, of a great piece of fiction which redound through the ages."

Shinjuku Thief was the alias of experimental electronic artist Darrin Verhagen, as well the Melbourne, Australia-based founder of the Dorobo criminal record mark. Taking his name from the Nagisa Oshima moving-picture show Shinjuku Dorobo Nikki ("Diary of a Shinjuku Thief"), Verhagen additionally integrated cinematic influences into his music by conceiving his work as soundtracks to nonexistent films; his debut, 1992's Bloody Tourist, drew every bit on ambient and industrial traditions, although in the future his more than industrial projects were recorded under the constitute Shinjuku Filth. (New Age-inspired works, accordingly, were attributed to Shinjuku Fluff.) The second Shinjuku Thief LP, 1992's The Scribbler, was a minimalist piece commisioned as a soundtrack for a stage performance based on Kafka's The Trial, while 1993's The Witch Hammer was the first gear in a series of in darkness orchestral records divine by the occult, complete with a nod to the German expressionist films of the 1920s. Branching out from the Shinjuku name, Verhagen adopted some other assumed name, that of Professor Richmann, to criminal record 1994's Succulent Blue Sway, a techno-inspired release composed for the Canberra-based Vis a Vis dance company. Detritus, a Shinjuku Filth collaboration with Black Lung's David Thrussel, followed in 1996. Two days later on, Verhagen followed with Raised by Wolves on Iridium.
